What is the procedure?

Dr. Josh Roller, Dr. Yong Kwon, Dr. Jaime Dutton, and Dr. Jessica Pries routinely perform this minimally invasive procedure, which involves wrapping the upper part of the stomach around the lower esophageal sphincter to strengthen the sphincter and prevent acid reflux and to repair a hiatal hernia.

Esophageal Reflux Surgery - Yong S. Kwon, MD

Laparoscopic reflux surgery vs. older techniques

Performing reflux surgery laparoscopically has been found to produce better results when compared to other methods. Some surgeons still perform Open GERD surgery (currently in about 15% of cases), but at Roller Weight Loss & Advanced Surgery, our experienced team of board-certified surgeons uses the most advanced laparoscopic procedures, which result in shorter incisions, less trauma, and a faster recovery time.

Benefits of advanced laparoscopic surgery for GERD (acid reflux)

The benefits of undergoing surgery laparoscopically include:

  • Less post-surgery pain
  • Shorter incisions
  • Less hospital time
  • Faster recovery
  • Shorter surgical scars

What is GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease)?

If the stomach acids are able to flow upwards into the esophagus, it can result in painful bouts of heartburn, vomiting, trouble swallowing, coughing, and sneezing. This is caused by the weakened action of a specific ring of muscle at the bottom of the esophagus, with the natural valve unable to close after swallowing.

When this valve is not functioning as nature intended, the stomach acids are able to move upwards. The stomach acid can burn the esophagus, and over time lead to the onset of a worsened condition. It’s imperative that the valve is repaired so that the structure stays healthy so the patient can enjoy a more comfortable life.

Surgical options for gastric reflux disease

The treatment experience is generally comfortable. You will arrive early to the hospital and will be put under general anesthesia. You will not experience pain or discomfort or have a memory of the surgery. While you are under anesthesia, several small incisions will be made, through which the laparoscope (small camera on the end of a slim tube) is inserted, with real-time images transmitted to a monitor to guide the surgeon. CO2 gas will be placed to expand the area to increase visibility of the structures to be repaired.

Nissen fundoplication

A procedure called Nissen fundoplication may be performed in which the top of the stomach is wrapped around the lower esophagus. This is the appropriate approach for patients with GERD as a result of a hiatal hernia.

Stretta procedure

Performed with an endoscope equipped with an electrode, tiny cuts are created in the esophagus to form scar tissue to strengthen the structure.

Recovery time

When you become alert after surgery, you will be released to return home under the care of another adult. You can expect to return to light activities such as walking or climbing stairs, but you must avoid lifting, pushing, pulling, or straining your muscles.

You will have a special diet to follow during the early stages of recovery. In most cases, you may return to more vigorous exercise such as running or sports within about four weeks.
