What Is Mounjaro?
Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a once-weekly injectable medication that helps in weight loss. The medication targets three hormones:
- Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1)
- Glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP)
- Glucagon
These hormones regulate glucose homeostasis and energy balance in the body.
Tirzepatide works by activating GLP-1 and GIP receptors, which stimulate insulin secretion and reduce glucagon secretion. This process leads to a decrease in blood glucose levels and an increase in insulin sensitivity. It also slows down gastric emptying, which makes you feel full for longer periods, reducing your appetite.
Furthermore, Tirzepatide inhibits the secretion of glucagon, which is a hormone that increases glucose production in the liver. By reducing glucagon secretion, Tirzepatide helps in maintaining glucose homeostasis in the body.
Tirzepatide has been shown to reduce body weight by decreasing food intake and increasing energy expenditure. It has also improved glycemic control in people with type 2 diabetes.
