It’s a familiar moment for so many of us - getting on the scale at the doctor’s office, and dreading being told that you need to lose weight - but often with no explanation of how to lose that weight or that surgery is an option. The experience can leave many people feeling defeated and depressed. Most patients know that obesity is a major health issue and don’t want to feel bad about seeking help! If you have had this negative experience, you are not alone. It’s called weight shaming, and it’s more common than you think!

A recent study from the University of London found that many obese people report feeling weight shamed when they see their Provider and will often skip appointments to avoid the embarrassment.

This experience has negative impacts for patients in the long term. The study has found that this shaming led to patients blaming themselves for their condition, often leaving them feeling humiliated, anxious, and more likely to overeat.

EFFECTS OF WEIGHT SHAMING

Researchers report that weight shaming can prevent patients from getting the services and treatments they need. This is a critical issue given the higher risk of serious health conditions obese people often face, such as:

  • Type 2 Diabetes
  • High Blood Pressure
  • Cancer
  • Heart Disease
  • Sleep Apnea
  • Joint and Bone Pain
  • Depression and Fatigue

The study recommends that medical professionals seek training around “non- stigmatizing weight-related communications.” The recommendations include increased education for healthcare students about the factors involved in regulating body weight and for all healthcare professionals to be more empathetic.
